How to Measure AI Visibility for a Local Business When Calls Are the Scoreboard

ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode now hand customers a short list of local businesses. Here are the five numbers that show whether yours is on it, how to check them yourself in thirty minutes a month, and how to tie them back to calls.

A homeowner in West Ashley asks ChatGPT who to call about an AC that keeps tripping the breaker. A couple in Mount Pleasant asks Google’s AI Mode for an estate planning attorney who explains things in plain English. Neither gets a page of links. Each gets three or four names and a sentence about why.

If you own a local business, you need to know how to measure AI visibility (some call it AI search visibility): whether your name is on that short list, how often, and whether it ever turns into a phone call. Most owners are guessing. This guide covers the five numbers we track for clients across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, and the thirty-minute version you can run yourself.

If you’re still working on getting into AI answers in the first place, start with our guide on how to show up in AI search. This post is about keeping score.

Being named is not the same as being recommended

Wil Reynolds at Seer Interactive made a point recently that every local owner should hear: showing up in an AI answer is not the same as being recommended. An assistant can list your business and then steer the reader toward someone else. It can name you with last year’s hours. It can describe the service you stopped offering.

That’s why a single “visibility” number misleads. In Google, a high ranking at least implied some trust. In an AI answer, the words around your name matter as much as the name itself.

It’s also why your Maps ranking doesn’t settle the question. BrightLocal ran about 200,000 local, unbranded searches across roughly 1,300 business locations this fall. The businesses they tracked appeared in Google Maps results about two-thirds of the time, but in only about a third of ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews answers. Doing well in the map pack and being recommended by AI are related, but they are not the same job.

Why one screenshot of ChatGPT tells you almost nothing

Ask an assistant the same question twice and you’ll often get a different list. In BrightLocal’s study, repeat runs of the same search shared only 20 to 33 percent of the same businesses. A client who sends us a screenshot of ChatGPT naming them, or not naming them, has caught one roll of the dice.

There’s a second reason. Assistants don’t answer from one place. They break the question into several smaller searches, read what comes back, and then write the answer. Seer calls this query fan-out. In practice it means AI is weighing what your website, your Business Profile, review sites and local press say about you, all at once.

So AI visibility has to be measured the way you’d measure anything noisy: the same questions, asked the same way, many times, tracked month over month. The trend is the signal.

The five numbers we track for AI visibility

1. Mention share

Take the questions your customers actually ask before they hire someone like you, ask every one of them in each assistant, and count how often your business is named. If 40 questions across five assistants produce 200 answers and you’re named in 30, your mention share is 15 percent.

2. Citation share

Of the answers that name you, how many also link to your website as a source? If 12 of those 30 mentions cite your site, your citation share is 40 percent. It’s a share of mentions, not of all answers. A mention builds awareness; a citation is what sends a visitor to your site.

3. Answer quality

For each mention, note whether the assistant recommended you, simply listed you, or nudged the reader elsewhere, and whether your details were right. SOCi’s Local Visibility Index found ChatGPT and Perplexity had business details right only about 68 percent of the time. A wrong phone number in an AI answer is a call that goes nowhere.

4. Who gets named instead

Every business that appears in an answer is competing with you for that question, whether you think of them as a competitor or not. Track the three to five you care about by name, including when they score zero. A rival you worry about who never shows up in AI answers is worth knowing too.

5. AI visits and calls

People do click from AI answers to websites. Not many yet: Clickport’s data put AI visits at about half a percent of sessions in October 2026. But those visitors bounced far less often than direct traffic (24.5 percent against 58.2 percent) and completed a goal about twice as often (20.7 percent against 11.1 percent). Small numbers, high intent.

Where AI gets its answers about Lowcountry businesses

Assistants show their sources, and those sources tell you exactly where you need to be accurate. Across the 1.9 million citations in BrightLocal’s study, business websites made up about 42 percent, Google Business Profiles about 28.5 percent, and Yelp about 9.5 percent, followed by Facebook, Tripadvisor, BBB, Angi and industry directories.

The split between assistants matters. Google’s AI leans heavily on your Business Profile. ChatGPT barely touches it and leans on Yelp and Bing instead. A plumber in Summerville with a perfect Business Profile and a two-year-old Yelp listing can look great in AI Mode and invisible in ChatGPT.

That makes source coverage a sixth, quieter number: of the sites AI cites for your category and town, how many have a complete, current listing for your business? We’ve written before about reading your Business Profile like a scoreboard. The same discipline applies to every listing an assistant trusts.

A thirty-minute monthly check you can run yourself

You don’t need an AI visibility tracking platform to start. Once a month:

  1. Write down ten questions your best customers ask before they call, in their words, not yours. Keep the list the same every month.
  2. Ask each one in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Mode. Note whether you were recommended, listed, steered away from, or missing, and who was named instead.
  3. Fix anything an assistant got wrong at the source: your website, Business Profile, Yelp and the directories it cited.
  4. In Google Analytics 4, create a custom channel group called AI Assistants that matches sources like chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and claude.ai, placed above Referral. Without it, many ChatGPT visits hide under Direct or Unassigned.
  5. Open Search Console’s AI performance report. Since August 31, 2026, every site can see its impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, though clicks aren’t shown yet.
  6. Add “ChatGPT or another AI tool” to the options when you ask new customers how they found you.

Ten questions by hand gives you a direction. It won’t give you a trend you can trust, because the answers move so much from one run to the next. That’s where a bigger, steadier question set earns its keep.

The phone is still the scoreboard

None of these numbers matter on their own. Mention share is worth tracking because it leads to citations, citations lead to visits, and visits lead to calls. If your mention share climbs and the phone stays quiet, something between the answer and the call is broken, and that’s the part to fix.

That’s the same test we apply to every channel. We’ve laid out what local SEO looks like when calls are the scoreboard and how to trace a lead from a search result to a closed job. AI answers are one more front door. They get measured by whether someone walks through it and picks up the phone.

What the CORE Team does about it

AI visibility tracking is part of every Organic Program level. Each month, the CORE Team asks the five assistants 30 to 100 buying questions modeled on how your customers talk, tracks your mention share and citation share, and watches up to five competitors. When an assistant gets your business wrong, we trace the source and fix it.

From the Growth level up, we go further with AI SEO: answer-first website content, FAQs and structured data, consistent listings, Business Profile posts, and earned local mentions that give AI something credible to cite. It’s all part of being Found Everywhere. You get the results in a plain-English report on the 10th of every month, including what changed and what we’re doing next.

You run your business. We make sure the people asking, and the assistants they ask, know you’re the one to call.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI visibility?

AI visibility, also called AI search visibility or LLM visibility, is how often, and how favorably, AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Mode name your business when people ask questions about what you do.

What is the difference between mention share and citation share?

Mention share is the percentage of AI answers that name your business. Citation share is the percentage of those mentions that also link to your website as a source. Mentions build awareness; citations send visitors.

Can a small local business show up in ChatGPT?

Yes. ChatGPT draws on business websites, Yelp, Bing and other directories, so a clear website and accurate listings on the sites it cites give a local business a real chance, even against bigger competitors.

How do I know if AI tools are sending me customers?

Set up an AI Assistants channel group in Google Analytics 4 so visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude stop hiding under Direct, and ask every new customer whether they found you through an AI tool.

How long does it take to improve AI visibility?

Usually a few months. Fixing listings and website details can help fairly quickly, while earning trusted local mentions builds over time. Nobody can honestly guarantee a spot in an AI answer, which is why we track the trend.
