AEO vs SEO: How to Show Up in AI Search (A Business Owner’s Guide)

AEO vs SEO in plain English: how AI tools like Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT find businesses, and the steps to show up in their answers.

Key takeaway

AEO is built on SEO. Make sure AI crawlers can reach your site, lead every page with a clear answer, and keep your business details and reviews consistent everywhere.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making your business easy for AI tools to find, understand and recommend. SEO helps your pages rank in search results. AEO helps your business become part of the answer in tools like Google’s AI Overviews and ChatGPT. The two are not rivals: AEO is built on top of good SEO.

This guide explains AEO vs. SEO in plain English, what Google and OpenAI actually say about how their AI answers find websites as of 2026, and the practical steps a local business can take to show up.

  • SEO earns the click. AEO earns the mention. You want both.
  • Google says there is no special trick for its AI Overviews or AI Mode. Pages must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet, and normal SEO best practices apply.
  • ChatGPT search relies on its own crawler. If your site blocks it, your pages will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
  • Clear, answer-first content wins. Short, direct answers to real customer questions are easy for AI tools to use.
  • Consistency builds trust. The same name, address, phone, services and reviews everywhere help AI tools describe you correctly.

What is answer engine optimization?

An “answer engine” is any tool that gives people a direct answer instead of only a list of links. Google’s AI Overviews, Google’s AI Mode, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity and voice assistants all fit the description.

When someone asks, “Who is a good family dentist in Mount Pleasant that takes new patients?”, these tools pull information from websites, business profiles and reviews, then write a summary. Answer engine optimization is about making sure your business is one of the sources they trust and mention.

You may also hear the terms GEO (generative engine optimization) or “AI search optimization.” They describe the same goal: being visible when the answer is written by AI.

AEO vs. SEO: what is the difference?

AEO and SEO share most of the same foundation. The difference is mostly in the goal and how results show up.

SEO AEO
Main goal Rank pages in search results and earn clicks Be cited or recommended inside AI answers
Where it shows up Google’s organic results and map AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Copilot, voice assistants
What content works Thorough pages that match a search Clear, direct answers inside those pages
Key signals Relevance, quality, links, technical health The same, plus consistent business facts and reviews across the web
How you measure Rankings, clicks, calls and forms Mentions, citations, AI referral visits and leads who say “AI recommended you”

Here is the key point: AEO does not replace SEO. AI tools rely on content they can find and trust, which is exactly what SEO builds. A business that skips SEO to chase AI answers usually ends up with neither. That is why the CORE Team treats AI search visibility as part of one connected SEO plan.

What Google and OpenAI say about AI answers (2026)

There is a lot of speculation about how AI search works. It helps to start with what the platforms themselves have published.

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google’s guide to AI features and your website is clear. It says there are no additional requirements and no special optimizations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. To be shown as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet.

Google’s recommended best practices are the familiar ones: allow crawling, make content easy to find through internal links, use good images and video, keep structured data in line with what is visible on the page, and keep your Business Profile information up to date. Google also notes that traffic from AI features is included in the “Web” search type in Search Console’s Performance report, and that clicks from results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, with visitors more likely to spend time on the site.

ChatGPT search

OpenAI’s documentation on its crawlers explains that a crawler called OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT’s search features. Sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. OpenAI uses a separate crawler, GPTBot, for training its models, and the two settings are independent. That means you can allow your site to appear in ChatGPT search without allowing it to be used for training.

How to show up in AI search: a step-by-step plan

These steps follow the platforms’ published guidance and the SEO fundamentals AI tools draw on. Work through them in order.

  1. Make sure you can be crawled. Check that your robots.txt file allows Googlebot and OAI-SearchBot, and that important pages are not set to “noindex.” Decide separately whether to allow training crawlers like GPTBot.
  2. Confirm your key pages are indexed. In Google Search Console, check that your homepage, service pages and location pages are indexed. If Google cannot show a page, its AI features cannot either.
  3. Give each service a strong, specific page. AI tools need details to recommend you: what you do, for whom, where, and what makes you a good fit. Vague pages give them nothing to quote.
  4. Lead with the answer. Start each page and section with a one- or two-sentence direct answer, then explain. More on this below.
  5. Use real questions as headings. “How long does an implant take to heal?” is easier for an AI tool to match than “Our Process.”
  6. Keep your business facts consistent everywhere. Your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook, Apple Maps, Bing Places and industry directories should show the same name, address, phone, hours and services.
  7. Earn reviews that describe what you do. A review that says “they fixed our AC the same day in Summerville” tells an AI tool far more than “great service.”
  8. Add structured data that matches the page. Schema markup for your business, services, reviews and FAQs helps machines read your details. Google’s structured data guide explains the basics. It should always match what visitors can see.
  9. Get mentioned by trusted sources. Local news, chambers of commerce, industry associations and partner businesses all help confirm that you are a real, respected business.
  10. Keep content current. Update service details, hours, staff and pricing language when they change, so AI answers are not working from old information.

How to write answer-first content

Answer-first writing is the single most useful AEO habit. It also makes your pages better for people. The idea is simple: answer the question in the first sentence or two, then add detail.

Here is a before-and-after example for a law firm page.

Before: “At our firm, we have proudly served the Lowcountry for many years, and we understand that every case is unique. Our dedicated team is committed to excellence.”

After: “In South Carolina, you generally have three years from the date of a car accident to file a personal injury lawsuit. Our Charleston car accident lawyers can review your case for free and explain the deadlines that apply to you.”

The second version answers a real question, names the location and service, and gives an AI tool something specific and useful to quote. (Always confirm legal and medical facts with a qualified professional before publishing.)

Answer-first checklist

  • The first sentence answers the question directly.
  • The service and location are named plainly.
  • Sentences are short and clear.
  • Facts are specific: timeframes, steps, what is included.
  • Related questions are answered further down the page.

How to rank in Google AI Overviews

Because Google says AI Overviews use the same foundation as regular search, the path to appearing there is the path to strong SEO. In practice, pages that get cited tend to share a few traits:

  • They already rank well, or at least on page one, for related searches.
  • They answer the question clearly and early.
  • They cover the topic thoroughly, including follow-up questions.
  • They come from sites Google already trusts on that subject.

For local businesses, your Google Business Profile matters too. Google’s guidance specifically mentions keeping Business Profile information current. A complete profile with strong reviews supports both the map and AI answers, which is why local SEO is a core part of AEO for service businesses.

Not sure which questions to target? Start with the ones customers already ask you. Our guide to keywords and search intent shows how to turn those questions into a page plan.

How to measure AI search visibility

AI visibility is newer and harder to measure than rankings, but you can still track it.

  • Search Console. Google includes traffic from AI features in the “Web” search type of the Performance report. Watch overall impressions and clicks for your key pages.
  • Analytics referrals. Look for visits referred from AI tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot and Perplexity.
  • Monthly prompt checks. Ask AI tools the questions your customers ask, like “best family dentist in Mount Pleasant,” and note whether you are mentioned and what they say.
  • Ask new customers. Add “AI tool like ChatGPT” to your “How did you hear about us?” options on forms and intake calls.
  • Accuracy. Check that AI answers describe your services, hours and location correctly. Errors usually point to inconsistent information somewhere online.

AEO for local service businesses

AI recommendations matter most when the stakes are high and people want a trusted shortcut. That describes many of the businesses we serve.

Medical and dental practices

Patients ask AI tools about procedures, recovery and which providers fit their needs. Detailed treatment pages, provider bios and reviews that mention specific services help you appear in those answers.

Law firms

People ask legal questions before they ever call a lawyer. Clear, accurate answers to common questions, tied to practice-area pages, position your firm as the helpful expert.

Home-service companies

Homeowners ask for fast, trusted help. Consistent business details, service-area pages and reviews that mention towns and jobs give AI tools what they need to recommend you.

Your AEO starter checklist

  • Robots.txt allows Googlebot and OAI-SearchBot.
  • Key pages are indexed in Google Search Console.
  • Each main service has its own detailed page.
  • Each page opens with a direct answer.
  • Headings use real customer questions.
  • Business name, address, phone and hours match everywhere.
  • Google Business Profile is complete and current.
  • Reviews are requested regularly and describe specific services.
  • Structured data is in place and matches visible content.
  • You check AI answers about your business every month.
