A friendly guide from your Charleston web design team at CORE CONNECT
Let’s Find You the Perfect Domain! #
So you’ve got this amazing business idea (or maybe you’re finally ready to get your existing business online), and now you need a domain name. You know, that yourcompany.com thing that people will type to find you on the internet.
Here’s the thing – finding out if your dream domain is available is actually pretty easy. I’m going to walk you through exactly how to do it, step by step.
The Easy Way: Domain Search Tools #
Think of these like Google, but for domain names. Here are my go-to favorite:
GoDaddy (The Old Reliable) #
Head over to godaddy.com and just type your business name (or whatever you want your website to be called) into that big search box. Don’t worry about adding “.com” – they’ll show you what’s available for .com, .net, .org, and a bunch of other options you probably didn’t know existed.
Here’s How It Works: #
- Type in your business name (just the name, no .com needed)
- Look at the results – green usually means available, red means someone beat you to it
- Don’t panic if .com is taken – there are other options (.net, .org, etc.)
- Pay attention to the price – that first year is often discounted, but renewals cost more
The Detective Method: WHOIS Lookup #
This is like doing a background check on a domain. Super useful when you want to know more about who owns a domain or when it might become available.
My Favorite WHOIS Tools: #
ICANN WHOIS Lookup (lookup.icann.org) This is the official one – like going straight to the courthouse records. If a domain exists, they’ll know about it.
Domain.com WHOIS (domain.com/whois) User-friendly version that doesn’t make your head spin with technical jargon.
What You’ll Learn: #
- If it says “No matching record” – Congrats! It’s probably available
- If you see registration info – Someone owns it, and you can see when they registered it and when it expires
- If contact info is hidden – They’re using privacy protection (which is smart, honestly)
The “Just Check” Method #
Sometimes I tell clients to just type the domain into their browser and see what happens. Seriously.
- You see a real website? It’s definitely taken and being used
- Get an error or “site not found”? Could be available, or registered but not being used
- See a page full of random ads? That’s a “parked” domain – taken but just sitting there making someone a few bucks
Okay, So Someone Already Has My Dream Domain… #
Don’t worry – happens to the best of us. Here’s what we can do:
Try Different Endings #
.netis a solid backup to .com.orgoften gets overlooked (great for nonprofits, but anyone can use it).cois trendy and professional.bizif you want to be obvious about being a business
Get Creative With Your Name #
- Add “Charleston” – like
yourcompanycharleston.com - Try your industry –
yourcompanydesign.com - Use “the” –
theyourcompany.com - Consider your service –
yourcompanysolutions.com
Is It Actually Being Used? #
Here’s a secret: tons of domains are registered but just sitting there doing nothing. If you really want a specific domain, you can sometimes buy it from the current owner. This gets complicated though, so let me handle that conversation if you’re interested.
What Makes a Great Domain Name? #
After designing websites for Charleston businesses for years, here’s what I’ve learned works:
The Good Stuff: #
- Short and sweet – People are lazy typists (myself included)
- Easy to remember – If your mom can remember it, you’re golden
- Sounds like your business – Don’t get too cute or clever
- Stick with .com if possible – People still trust it most
- Simple to spell – No one wants to guess at weird spellings
What to Avoid: #
- Hyphens – They’re annoying to say out loud (“dash” this and “dash” that)
- Numbers – Is it “5” or “five”? Confusing.
- Really long names – If it’s longer than your business name, rethink it
- Trademark issues – Don’t try to be clever with big company names
So How Do You Actually Buy It? #
You’ve got two options here, and honestly, both work great:
DIY Route #
The Good:
- You’re in total control
- Usually saves a few bucks
- You learn how it all works
Here’s How:
- Pick one of those sites I mentioned above
- Make an account (keep that login info safe!)
- Add your domain to the cart like you’re shopping on Amazon
- Pay for it (most people do 1-2 years upfront)
- Turn on auto-renewal so you don’t accidentally lose it
Let Me Handle It #
The Good:
- I take care of all the techy stuff
- It’s ready to go when your website launches
- No chance of forgetting to renew it
- I make sure everything’s configured correctly
Here’s How:
- Tell me what domain you want (or give me a few options)
- I check availability and let you know what’s possible
- I handle the purchase and setup
- When your website goes live, everything just works
Honestly? Most of my clients go this route because it’s one less thing to worry about. Just shoot me an email and we’ll get it sorted.
Don’t Forget These Important Bits #
Renewal Time #
Domains aren’t forever – you’ve got to renew them every year (or pay for multiple years upfront). Set up auto-renewal or you’ll get a nasty surprise when your website disappears because you forgot to pay the $15 renewal fee.
Privacy Protection #
When you register a domain, your contact info becomes public. For a few extra dollars a year, you can hide that information. Trust me, it’s worth it to avoid the spam emails and random phone calls.
Moving Day #
You can always move your domain to a different company later, but there are some rules. You usually can’t transfer it for the first 60 days after you buy it, and you’ll need to keep your account info handy.
