Is SEO Dead? What Falling Click-Through Rates Actually Mean in 2026

Desktop click-through rate for the #1 Google result fell from 17.83% to 7.43% in twelve months. SEO isn't dead, but the scoreboard changed. Here's what the data says and what to measure instead.

Is SEO dead? No. But the number-one ranking doesn’t pay what it used to, and anyone still measuring success by position alone is reading an old scoreboard. In our 2026 research, desktop click-through rate for the #1 Google result fell from 17.83% to 7.43% in twelve months. At the same time, sites that rank #1 still have meaningfully stronger link profiles, and AI systems still lean on pages that rank. SEO didn’t die. It changed what it is for.

What Happened to Clicks in 2026?

Between September 2025 and August 2026, desktop click-through rate fell at every ranking position, and hardest at the top. Position #1 dropped 10.41 percentage points. Position #2 dropped 12.20 points, from 15.27% to 3.07%. Mobile held up far better: Position #1 fell 4.37 points and Position #2 actually rose slightly.

Chart: organic click-through rate by position on desktop and mobile, September 2025 vs August 2026
PositionDesktop changeMobile change
Position 1−10.41 pp−4.37 pp
Position 2−12.20 pp+0.53 pp
Position 3−2.85 pp−1.21 pp
Positions 4–10−0.63 pp−1.15 pp

The data shows the decline, not one single cause. AI answers, layout changes and shifting habits all play a part. But the biggest change on the page is easy to see.

Why Are Zero-Click Searches Growing?

Because Google now answers more questions itself. AI Overviews appeared on 61.43% of tracked results in August 2026, up from 5.93% two years earlier. When one appears, its cited sources take an estimated 42–45% of clicks and the top organic result falls to 21–24%. A searcher who gets a good answer at the top often doesn’t need to click at all.

That sounds like bad news, until you look at who still clicks. The person who scrolls past an AI answer and picks your site is usually further along: comparing options, checking prices, ready to call. Fewer clicks, but better ones.

If Clicks Are Falling, Why Does SEO Still Matter?

Three reasons came straight out of the data.

  • AI answers are built from search results. The pages cited in AI Overviews overwhelmingly already rank well. If you don’t rank, you’re rarely in the answer.
  • Authority still compounds. Domains ranking #1 had a median of 111 referring domains, 31% more than positions four through ten. Sites cited by AI for competitive topics had even stronger profiles.
  • Local results are growing. The Google map pack rose from 19.98% to 25.99% of results. For a service business, that is visibility AI hasn’t taken.

What Should You Measure Instead of Rankings?

Rankings still matter, but they are one screen of a bigger scoreboard. Here is what we track for every client each month:

  • Impressions and clicks by query type. Where are you seen, and where is AI absorbing the click?
  • AI citations and mentions. Does your business appear in Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT for the questions your buyers ask?
  • Google Business Profile actions. Calls, direction requests and website taps from the map pack.
  • Conversions, not just visits. With fewer clicks, every visit has to work harder.

So What Should a Business Owner Do Now?

Keep the fundamentals, and widen the target. Make sure your key pages rank. Rewrite them so the answer is easy for an AI to quote. Keep your Google Business Profile active. Earn links and mentions from relevant local sources. And make your site ready to convert the higher-intent visitor who still clicks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SEO dead in 2026?

No. SEO is changing, not disappearing. AI answers are built largely from pages that already rank, and ranking sites still have stronger link profiles. What has changed is that a #1 position earns fewer clicks on its own, so visibility now has to be measured across AI answers, maps and classic results together.

What is a zero-click search?

A zero-click search is one where the searcher gets what they need on the results page, from an AI Overview, map pack or other feature, without clicking through to a website. They are growing as AI Overviews spread to a majority of results.

How much has organic click-through rate dropped?

In our research, desktop click-through rate for the #1 result fell from 17.83% to 7.43% between September 2025 and August 2026, and Position #2 fell from 15.27% to 3.07%. Mobile declined much less, and Position #2 on mobile rose slightly.

Is SEO still worth paying for?

For most local businesses, yes, as long as the work covers the whole results page: being cited in AI answers, showing up in the map pack, and ranking and converting in classic results. SEO that only reports on rankings is the version that is losing value.
