How to Create a Custom Metric

How to Create a Custom Metric

The standard widgets help you monitor your business development. However, if you find them lacking, you can use Custom Metrics to combine multiple metrics from different data sources, apply calculations, and display the results in your dashboards or custom reports.

Creating a Custom Metric #

You can create a custom metric inside the Dashboard and Reporting section. The process is similar in both sections, and creating a custom metric in a section will make it available on the other as well.

Dashboard Section #

To create a Custom Metric in the Dashboards section, click the pencil icon at the top to enter editing mode.

Click Add widget and switch to Custom Metrics.

Reporting Section #

To create a custom metric inside the Reporting section, navigate to the Custom Reports tab and create or edit a report.

Click the plus sign icon and switch to the Custom Metrics tab.

Building the Custom Metric #

Click “+ Create Custom Metric.” This will be under a little ghost if it’s your first time creating one.

Select “Start From Scratch” from the available options; selecting Clone Existing will only allow you to copy and modify an existing custom metric.

Fill in the general details, these will be:

  • Metric Name: To define the name that the metric will have inside the system.
  • Data Type: This changes how the metric’s value will be displayed. For example, if the information displayed is a currency or a percentage.
  • Description: To add identifying context to your metric.

In the formula field, use the value menu to add your metrics, operators, and numbers to create the calculation formula. The builder will validate your formula and flag any errors automatically.

Note: The custom metrics support the use of up to 4 metrics per formula.

Open the Advanced Settings to choose a date property to link the metric to a specific timeline (1) or specify whether a metric’s increase or decrease is positive (2).

Click Create to save your metric.

It will now appear in the Custom Metrics list and be available as a widget option.

You can add them as any other widget by clicking it, setting a date range for comparison, and clicking Add.

That’s all there’s to it! You’re ready to use this feature to easily include extra information to create complete reports and functional widgets.
